Axle swap

This may not be the right area, but it wouldn't let me post in the mods section, so here I am.

I have a 2000 F350 SRW 4x4 with 5.38 gears and Non-LS rear axle.
I don't have to tell you a non-LS axle bites especially on a 4x4.
Lockers are expensive. I'm old and retired and far from rich.
But. I do have a 2005 F250 4x4 FX4 with LS rear axle.
It's having 6.0 issues (posted on that forum) that i've been trying to figure out and i'm about to the point to say screw it, and parts it's out.
The F250 has 3.54 gears, so I know I just can't change the rear end and swapping both axles would be a headache since the '05 has coil fronts and a few other differences. Not something I want to get into.
I'm getting to my question, sorry for rambling

What I'd like to know is if I could just put the LS part in my F350 without the gears and what kind of job would that be?

You sure can, but....setting up used gears is more difficult than setting up new gears.

All you have to do is swap the carrier, get a dial indicator and measure the backlash before you remove the old carrier then shim the new carrier to the same backlash, you will need a shim kit for a Ford 10.5.
