lose of power while the pedal is depressed

after accelerating to a given speed, the check engine light will illuminate and then the pedal becomes unresponsive to any pedal changes. Once the pedal is allowed to return back to the idle position, the pedal can be pressed again and will respond with the check engine light going out. Once the engine light comes back on, soon the pedal will become unresponsive. If I bring the vehicle up to road speed and set the cruise control, the vehicle will accel. and decel. as needed to meet the road demands. I replaced the throttle position sensor and that did not solve my problem. thank you in advance for any help rendered.
