Edge CTS 2 Shutting Off Randomly

Hi Guys,

I installed a Edge CTS 2 with a EFT probe a year ago in my 96 F350 and it works great about 80% of the time....

The screen will go black at random times (around 20% of the times I start the truck) and stay off for my whole drive.

When I touch the screen while driving after it shuts off, it will reboot and then turn off again.

I have already spoke with Edge and they have sent me the most up to date software.

Any ideas what this could be?

Bad OBD2 Port?

Bad Ground Somewhere?

My mechanic can't figure it out and I am sick of pulling over and restarting the truck to get the Edge to reset (so I can see my EGT's while towing)

Thanks!

Are you monitoring battery voltage? I do know if the system voltage gets below a certain value, they will power themselves off.

@Jokester

I am monitoring voltage on my CTS and on the stock gauge on the dash and haven't seen anything out of the ordinary.

When the CTS does shut off it is usually pretty soon after starting the truck.

Could be something to do with the glow plugs turning off?

I have cleaned the connections with both batteries and just installed fresh batteries in the truck.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to troubleshoot this?

Could this be a bad ground issue at either the chassis ground (#4 pin on OBD2) or sensor ground (#5 pin on OBD2)?

I will check both of these this weekend and write an update here after...

if im remembering your model is the touch screen right? Edge hasn't released anything official but the touch screen models do not play well with the OBS trucks ecm. I've known numerous people who went to the previous model with buttons and it works just fine. I don't understand the technical aspects but I imagine it just takes more ram/memory/power or something to run the touch screen vs button type etc.

@Justin 0009 mine is the touch screen version...

I hope you are wrong about this as the unit was not cheap.

I chose it over gauges, because of the back up camera and the ability to read codes.

I have been using edge products for 10+ yrs. 99% they work great but for some reason a great deal of OBS trucks don't work well with the touch screen units. I don't feel its edges fault though. They work on 90% of the cars and trucks that have an OBDII port and its just 20+ yr old computers working with newer stuff. Kind of like windows not supporting windos xp and so on etc. Two friends have nearly the identical problems you did. One deals with it, the other got the button version like I have and no more issues etc.

I am hoping to not have to ditch the CTS2 as it wasn't cheap and won't be worth that much used....

When I was driving yesterday my edge showed my batteries at 0 volts, but the gauge on the dash showed 13.5 or so.

When I restarted the truck the edge read the battery voltage as 13.5 again.

Any idea what that could mean? Is that related to my problem?
