I know it's not wood kris lol but it sure looks like it. Just bizarre how the frame is coloured like that but everything else isn't.

It's a southern thing jj, we don't really prep our frames for winter every year, so they look like that lol

We call that a desert Patina or rock varnish!
sorta a family secret, my pahpah developed it for his Model T

previously used an entire cedar log and chainsawed the frames, but that cinder is so spindly...
switched instead to 4" x 12" #2 Douglas Fir (rough sawn) & readily available
and just use my chainsaw from there.
Cedar frames last longer for wet climates....

but I'm liking the dougy fir for strength!

YOU'VE got me going down there to have another look at that frame...

seems it's got rust streaks showing through old undercoating!
the other bits have had oil on them over the years and been wiped clean....
not worth as much without that patina I'm afraid...

I did not get as far as I wanted this weekend. It was one of those weekends where everything went wrong....LOL. I finished stripping the parts truck and went to move what was left of it down behind the barn and thats when the fun started. I backed my wrecker to it, tilted the bed back and down, hooked the cable to it and the next thing I know there is hydralic fluid spraying everywhere. The line that runs the lenght of the bed inside this 4"x4" box blew. 6 hours later it was out and the new one was in. A buddy stopped over with beer and that was the end of it for me. Finally got it moved Sunday

I wanted to get the engine set down in this weekend but I did get eveything on so it is ready to go in tonight.

Then I can degrease my garage. Between cleaning parts and spilling oil out of the old engine its a mess right now...

I don't mind a little oil here and there. Rust protection/prevention
