1996 F350 for slide-in camper?

I'm looking for a dually diesel to haul a fairly large slide in camper (3000# dry). I'm a newbie to trucks, but I like the reliability and simplicity of the 7.3's I've driven. Other than obvious things (rust, major mechanical problems), is there anything that would make an OBS 350 a bad candidate for hauling 4000-5000 lb loads? I know it will meet the GVWR and axle limits for the truck, if just barely.

Should be fine. Numerous people use theirs to only haul loads. These motors were built to work.

My 97 F350 4X4 CC non-dually carries my 4500# Alpenlite just fine. Rear axle weight is max'd out but no problems since 2002 when I bought the camper. Dually axle is rated for more i believe, so you will fine with only a 3000# camper payload. I have a 4:10 ratio rather than 3:73 on diff. You may want to consider that in your search. Also had a leaf spring pack made to replace the single OEM over-load leaf rather than air bags and when camper on truck loaded with all our crap inside, I'm level. Dually probably won't need that like my singe does with your camper weight, but many do go with bags even with duallys. My camper plus truck = 11,500lbs total and pulls all that just fine averaging 10-12mpg with 4:10 gears working like she was built for.

I haul my Lance 1010/3800* with my dually and no problems at all. I use the Edge tuner when hauling and leave it on stock when not. Of coarse there's been many upgrades over the years to get it where I'm comfortable using it. Hardly know I'm going up grades.
