@ JR, have you ever thought that maybe your EGT's climb really fast when "hammering" on the highway because the pump is turned up too much on your N/A truck? The guys on oilburners.com suggest turning up the pump in 1/2 flat increments on N/A IDI's.

I know a pyrometer and an EGT gauge are the same thing, I just threw that comment in there because the OP wanted to turn his pump up without one.

maybe his egts are high because hes "hammering" it
when im in the 12 valve and i get on it my egt gauge wraps around

My buddy had his 6.9 with a 7.3idi pumped maxed out. Ran her for over a year till he sold it like that.. didn't burn anymore oil than before. Beat the living hell out of the thing too. No pyro. Ran that sucker up a mountain pass with a boat in tow flat footed the entire way up the hill at 35mph. Don't know how hot it got but ran perfectly fine. I dont really see how you could melt one of these engines.

A stock N/A IDI can hit 1200* on the pyro fairly easily. Thats why turning it up some makes things scary. Can it survive? Sure, look at the poster above ^^^ but I would chance it. I want to kick the engineers of the big three in the nuts everytime they come out with a new truck, and they dont have a pyro. Its important to have, and gives you good baselines to base things.

I had a 91had banks turbo kit on it 50 HP injectors I turned the injection pump all way up and it blew up too days later truck did have 200k but just way my experience went and I shouldn't turned it all way up but was young and dumb ha
