Swap 7.3 idi for gas?

Luckly my powerstroke in my van has been flawless, I love it! But now I come to you because the 7.3L idi in my fire deprtment's F350 medic unit seems to have died. Our department is very very small with almost no budget to speak of, so we need to find the cheapest way to get the truck running again. A new diesel is way too much and used ones seem to be hard to find or have way too many miles on them.

So my question is: what would it take to put in an older gas engine? Are there any that will bolt to the transmission? It's a heavy rig, but never tows and never goes out of town real far, so a diesel isn't really needed and old ford gas engines seem to be a dime a dozen. Plus there are a lot of people on the department that can work on gas should it have issues down the road.

have you talked to any shops about actually fixing the current engine? with swappin a gas engine into it, your going to have to really clean out the fuel system, and possibly replace the fuel pump/ and pick up in the tank. the lines are full of diesel, maybe a shop is willing to cut you deal being as its an emergency service vehicle, but just swapping a gas engine is is fairly simple, especially if your going to a carb, but then your going to be tinkering with a carb forever, and unless the engine is a new reman, your going to be SOL when repair time comes because you're going to have at best a 60 day warranty from date of purchase.
