91 7.3 swap into 94 ranger

I have a ranger project currently with a 383 Lt1 in it looking for more torque and higher limit as to what I can do with it. The tires are 6' tall 600lbs tcase ratio is 4 to 1 with 6.72 gears in the rears. I have no diesel experience and can get a 7.3 with a c6 for $800 I know it is a good running motor the trans will need work to deal with the extra power im looking for. Is this the way to go Ive had so many ideas thrown at me by diesel guys each with there own picks, cummins a cat c-7 and the 7.3 any help would be very appriciated

wow thats a sweet truck. The original pre powerstroke 7.3 was an old school indirect injected engine with mechanical injection. these older engines will run foreve as there isnt much to go wrong in them like a programming and what not. i dont know too much about these engines but i know they can have potential. You can turbo them and the last 2 years actually came stanard with one. However they also run high compression ratios so boost has to be limited. Ill let someone with more info chime in, good engine tho

It would be a waste of time to put an IDI in that. If you can find a 7.3 or 6.0 powerstroke you would be much better off.

Putting the IDI in there would leave you at about the same limits as your 383 stroker.

Late 99-2000 as far as stock engines. 95-2000 if you want aftermarket injectors.

Properly tuned you can get very close to your 1000ft lb torque for a hell of alot cheaper than you will with that IDI

Late 99-up 7.3 with custom tunes alone will get you about 320hp 8-900ft lbs torque. A set of stage 2 injectors and 38r turbo will get you 450hp 1100 tq Hybrids and 38r even more

If you get a 95-2000 model 7.3 forged rod block you are lookin at less than 10k to do it.
