I have a '13 (metal pan) with a slight oil leak in the corner of my lower oil pan.
I am going to go ahead and replace the pan while I am in there since they are cheap but was wondering if there are any benefits to using a gasket rather than the grey RTV.
I see Mahle sells one that has a silicone bead - any experiences good or bad with that option?
However, RTV has to be done right, and you should let the oil drip off the motor for a few hours before you go at it. Any oil in your RTV can cause a leak. And its very difficult to stop the oil from dripping down the block unless you just wait it out.
Following up to close the loop. Turns out it was not the lower pan at all but the upper pan running down to the lower pan. I was not able to see it run from higher up until I really cleaned everything up well.
Long story short, while they have it apart I am having them do upper pan gasket, rear main, lower pan (just in case) and oil filter housing o-ring/gasket. I do not want any drips on this thing for a long time.
My shop has always been pretty fair with me - but I wanted to float this out to the Org to see if anyone had a guesstimate on what price tag should be. He quoted me a number but said he could 'work with me'. Just trying to get an idea of how much 'work' I need him to do on the price.
Not sure what the price he quoted you is but one reason the price to do the upper oil pan is high results in the requirement to remove the transmission to complete the job.
