ALTERNATOR ISSUES

I bought a new Motorcraft 140A alternator and within about 30 seconds of running it got super hot and started smoking. I took it back off and noticed the ring connector was burnt but I think this happened with my old alternator (110A). Is the OEM wiring big enough to run a 140 amp?
