solved - made it home. 4x4 engages while driving.

2003 F350 4x4. On a road trip while driving down the interstate the 4x4 engaged. Pulled over and it finally disengaged. Started driving again and it locked in again. Pulled the 111 fuse out and it did it again. I’m along ways from home. Anybody have any advise. Thanks in advance.

Its probably just the light, google where the relay is under the hood and pull it.

FWIW you can drive in 4Hi with no real ill effects except for MPG loss, and if your hubs are in Auto they probably arent locking in anyways.

Thanks Heavy. I have the vacuum lines caped off going to the hubs anyway. It is definitely going into 4x4. When I stop the drive shaft is locked in.

I tried to do a search on here with no luck.

Thanks Heavy. The hubs have the vacuum line bypassed. Can’t be good for the transfer case to engage doing 75 down the interstate. It’s is locking, when I stop the front drive shaft is locked in. Surely this has happened to someone else.

Pull the relay or disconnect the harness on the xfer case.

Pray its not mechanical lock up, if it is you have to pull the shaft and hope the case doesnt blow.
Obv VERY worst case.

So, you must have manual hubs then, right? When you stop and the front drive shaft is locked, is your 4x4 light on on the dash and do your front axles spin free? If you turn the key off, does it unlock?

Worst comes to worse, yank the front driveshaft off to get it home and then figure it out.

It unlocks after sitting a while. Guess I’m gonna pull the shaft out. I have manual hubs. Thanks Heavy and Jokester.

When it locks, turn the key off and see if it unlocks. If so, I would think that would point to an electrical problem. If it doesn't, you're probably looking at something mechanical. At least it would help you narrow it down somewhat...

When's the last time your x-fer case fluid was changed?

I changed the fluid 2 oil changes ago, little over 10000 miles. Sometimes it unlocks when shut down. I think it’s electrical.

if its electrical, then when it unlocks pull the relays and unhook the harness on the xfer case.
