Engine codes

Hello all!
I am needing some wisdom on trouble codes. I know there are different"soft" vs "hard" codes. My issue is getting a- every so often- erratic idle. Usually stay between 635 and 642 when stopped(in gear or park) but now and then it'll start jumping anywhere between 590ish to 710ish. I don't get any check engine light but my edge monitor says codes P0404-05 which are both EGR which I thought where "hard codes" that should make check light come on correct? I clear them and it's fine for a few days. Put new sensor and EGR valve in twice without any change in performance. Have new FICM,injector harness, valve and cooler. Stumped. So is Diesle shop. No codes show on any diagnostic/scan tool even running erratic except edge monitor(and customer service is garbage so no help there).

Appreciate any helpful thoughts. I'm new but not green so don't comment if you just want to be a jack wagon.

The P404 & 405 are both soft codes. I just bought a truck that had both codes. A used EGR from my old truck that was deleted removed both codes. Are you using Ford EGR’s? The new truck had what looked like a newer Dorman (POS!)

Not sure why the RPM would hunt. Even when the codes were present it didn’t effect the idle.

Questions...
  • You mention putting in a new sensor but don't say which one. ICP?
  • When you say "Have new FICM,injector harness, valve and cooler", is "valve" referring to the EGR valve or is there also a new IPR valve in there?

I'll attach Pinpoint Test W from the PCED. That will cover the EGR codes. I have a feeling that your idle miss may be something else.

Your monitor situation doesn't sound great. As a monitor, the edge is fine, but only fine, IMHO. ...and who knows what a generic diesel shop scanner might tell you!? You may want to get an OBDII port reader and Torque or Forscan. You wouldn't have to wonder what you are missing.

Last thing... It always helps to know about the truck. Year, miles, mods (especially fuel and exhaust), etc.
