18mm or 20mm head gaskets?

I have a problem with my degas bottle pressurizing and have come to the conclusion my head gaskets need to be replaced. I’m trying to order everything that’s needed before I start to minimize down time. I’m having trouble with ordering heads and head gaskets because the first question is, “are they 18 or 20mm?” I’ve called several Ford parts counters and even they don’t agree. My truck is a 2006 and has a 12/06/2005 build date. The last 6 digits of the VIN is C20640. Is there any way to be sure without starting the job and then ordering the parts?

Assuming that there's a 6E at the front of your C20640
HVBOM says that Ford put 20mm gaskets on your truck

Pretty sure they are 18mm. The commonization began Jan 11, 2006.

The way to check easily:

The 18mm heads have 28mm core plugs and the 20mm heads have 32mm core plugs on the front of the heads

If you have a December 05 build date, then your motor probably has an October-ish build date. That is the date you are really looking for. I would say that you have the 18mm dowels. But that's just my way of thinking. My 06 has an October 05 build date and I am about 3 days from starting my tear down and I have already bought 18mm heads and gaskets and I'm not scared. On the other hand, I'm also not that close to the date of commonization. I dont think I would be scared to order 18mm stuff if I were in your boat. But that's just me! Best of luck on your build and let us know what you find!

In fire you can plan everything out to the minute, and a minute before that everything changes.
