Crank no start...sometimes.

OK so a few months ago I cranked my truck and it didn't start. Tried a few more times and started up. All was well. Drove it 20-30 times since then. Just did a round of maintenance and a lot of engine cleaning and it does it again...cranks and doesn't start. Try again and it starts. All seems well but I know that trouble is brewing. Get in it to go out to eat yesterday and crank crank crank, no start. Give up and take the wife's car. At work today read that one thing to rule out is the ICP sensor on the passengers side valve cover. Unfortunately today when I got home in my trusty old for Ranger (I wish my F250 was 1/3 as reliable as that thing) I jump in the 250 and after a slightly longer than normal crank it fires up and runs perfectly. Like, damn it, pick one. Run or don't.

Only code not related to modifications is P2614 Camshaft Position Output Circuit / Open which I read could well be caused by a long crank.

What do you guys think?

Jon

With the truck running, wiggle the harness going to the cam sensor and wiggle the sensor itself. Be careful of the belt and the fan as they are nearby. Report back.

If you have a scanner, try to get it to not start and watch for FICM Sync while cranking. If you don't have sync, the cam sensor and/or harness need to be repaired.

Alrighty, found the cam sensor and gave it a good jostling with the truck running. Nothing happened. Was I waiting to see if it would start running rough?

No it would have shut off if the cam sensor was bad. Are you able to get it to not start again?

No it is starting just fine now. Yesterday it acted like it had zero interest in starting at all.

Watch for FICM sync when it won't start next time

Nevermind. I see now that my CTS2 starts booting up as soon as I hit the starter. I set one of the PIDs to FICM sync so the next time I have an issue I will let it boot up the rest of the way and see if I get a 0 or a 1. Naturally I can't get it to act up now.

It would be nice to see FICMv on KoEO and starting. I have an Edge CTS (Not CTS2) and it will not display those. Mine will only power on the truck starts up. For KOEO and Cranking, I will pull out my SCANGAUGE.

Try turning the key on and then bumping the starter. Not enough to start. Mine will start up once I do that. Only realized yesterday.
