Biggest tire for a stock 17" rim

I have a 12 cc 4x4. It came with 245's. that's around a 31" tire. Would like to go to a 34.5" or a 315. Will the stock rim work or am I limited to a 33" tire,285.

How wide is your stock rim? That is what you should be concerned with.

Being that a 245 is only 9.5" wide, I wouldn't think that your wheel is much more than 8". I had 285s on an 8" rim and the tire pressure needed to be around 40. When the monkeys at the tire store mount your tires, they inflate to the number printed on the side, never mind that that number is MAX psi. From experience, a 285 on an 8" wheel at that pressure WILL ride on the center of the tread. When I mounted them on a 10" wheel, I was able to up my tire pressure.

As far as 315s go, I wouldn't mount one on anything LESS than a 10" wheel. I am currently running 315s on 10s and have to keep my pressure down at 40 psi for best tread wear.

LT285/75R17 (34x11.5) is about the best larger tire for the stock 17" wheels IMO.

Also you do realize that 245, 285, and 315 are not measurments of the tires diameter right? The first # is the width in mm (25.4mm=1'). So a 315 is a 12.5" wide tire... and 285 is a 11.5"

the next # in the "tire code" is the aspect ratio of the sidewall. It is a % of the width. So the higher the # the taller the sidewalls. Low profile tires will have anywhere from 25-50% aspect ratio.

285/70R17 and 285/35R17 are almost 10" different in diameter....

That Metric system sure can make you look foolish.: Thank you for the lesson on tires. I assumed bigger number, bigger tire. So wider rims are a definite.
