I need some assistance with tire size

I have a 2000 350 with an 8" lift currently running 37x12.50x16.5. I have purchased a set of wheels that are 20x12 (with a -44 offset which should stick out significantly more than normal wheels) and I'm trying to figure out the tallest tires I can put on without issue. Reason being since I am pretty much going to stick with military tires(a set is about $1k or less) the taller I go the wider they are and I want something wider than my rim. I was talking to a guy about getting a set of military tires and he was trying to tell me that i can run the 14.00r20 which is basically a 44 since on my wheel it will be about a 42 and that should fit just fine. I just don't want to get a tire that is too big that I have issues with rubbing or tearing up the fender or bumper.
Any thoughts? Any and all advice will be much appreciated.
