Checking front hubs.

Whats the best way to check the front hubs on a 2001 F-250 4X4? I have some break rotor issues on the passenger side, and wanna make sure my hubs are ok while Im fixing the breaks. I can hear an odd sound, almost like a clunking, or rattling, while I turd the wheel . It does this with hubs locked or unlocked. I can also feel it in the front universal join as I turn the wheel.
