37 m16's on stock 20's?

I know that the general concensus is that you can go 1/2 an inch under the reccomended rim width for tires, but I have a friend running 37 ssr's on his stock 20's and he has a solid 35,000 on those tires and they still look pretty good. The ssr's are 37x12.5x20 with a rec. rim size of 20x10. The m16's are 37x13.5x20 with a reccomended rim size of 20x9.5-11. Would I wear right through these tires with the stock rims on there/ is this really dangerous? I just want to know if it can be done while still having nearly normal tire wear.
