Towing with or w/o a Camper shell

I do a lot of towing with a 20' enclosed trailer. I currently have a 2013 F250 without a camper shell. I am thinking about buying one to help out with fuel mileage.

Has anyone actually done some testing to see if a camper shell makes a difference or not?

Thanks for the info.

I can't say what exactly it will do for a superduty... but I had a cap on my lifted Ranger and it only helped a little. I think it helped with the aerodynamics, but then the weight of the cap kinda takes away the help from the aerodynamics. I did love my cap though, used it all the time. One of the best things I ever bought for that truck!

I can't say it actually improves mileage, but it surely doesnt hurt mine.

I get 21 mpg with my 96 F250 at 70 mph not towing, and 14 mpg towing a 6000 pound travel trailer at 60 mph.

With the campertop protecting a lot of my equipment, I've maxed out my gross vehicle combined weight when towing my trailer. It helps me a lot while not hurting my mileage at all. It may even help a bit.

It makes a big difference, I pulled my 24 ft one day with the cap off, I could definitely tell the difference, it even handled different.

Really didn't make a difference for me either. Pic in my avatar was before I added my topper. Adding mostly for the ones who love to see pics.

I'm not a fan of topper's, my brother is

I do have a fiberglass lid, that I took off years ago and is now living in the garage, I felt no difference and it actually gets worse fuel mileage with it. Plus if you decide to upgrade your camper to a 5th wheel is not an option unless you get rid of the shell.

I'd have to say that there's no way it could be worse fuel milage with the topper on. The topper is keeping the air up and off some of the front, you're "pulling" more air on the front of the trailer without a topper on it.
