Trailer brake disconnect

I have searched but have not found an answer but I have found that it appears to be a common problem. I have an 05 with the built in TBC. Occasionally whle traveling with the trailer it beeps and shows "trailer disconnected" on the screen. Other than tracing all the wires from the truck to the trailer randomly has anyone heard of something specific to look for?

Thanks

I dug a little deeper and found that the trailer wire that connects to the truck had damage to it. The black wire was cut about 3/4 through and the previous owners had just wrapped it in tape. I fixed it with a butt connector and heat shrink and will hope that does the trick. I see that the black wire is for the 12v charging and so I don't know if that would have caused the TBC to show disconnected off and on like it did.... The blue wire is for the brakes and it appeared fine....
