I leave the tranny in the normal drive position when in tow/haul... That would be towing my 5th wheel where the max weight is 13.5k... I'm never much about 11.5k though and there tends to be a bunch of uphill grades to get out of Phoenix to go north.. I do have the advantage of a 5 speed auto however and run a 3.73 posi rearend...

Ken....

Since you're saying to get a tranny gauge and there is already one on the dash, I'm assuming that you don't trust the oem on. Correct?:beer2:

Yeah the stock tranny temp gauge doesnt give you an actual temp reading, so you know when its starting to heat up, and you can either get out of the gas, or pull over to cool the tranny. The stock gauge by the time it reads hot its probobly too late for your tranny, or at the very least has shortened the life of your tranny.

Suggested Alarm Settings?

Also, by down shifting, you keep you EGT's a little lower. As said before, get gauges. I recommend both tranny and EGT.
With my rig I can hit 1,500* (turbo meltdown) real quick.

And I have 4.10's also
I'm in the same boat: 14,000# load, 4.10's. I just got gauges with my Edge Evo II and now would like advice on safe ranges to operate, specifically trans temp and EGT. I am currently running in stock mode as this is my first week with the Edge unit and gauges. I am trying to get a baseline of what is "normal" for my truck with various loads. As others have mentioned, it is amazing how much the trans temp can climb and the factory gauge registers no change!!

So, what would you suggest is safe operating temp for trans temp and for EGT?

TIA.

I am sure more say 220 for trans is as high as you safetly want to run and EGTs somewhere around 1150 constant or brief bursts higher than that... these numbers come from what I've seen in my time on the .org

Thanks for the oem gauge answer. I'd ask that same question several time on another PSD site without an answer. I suspected as much. Looks like another 3 gauge mount is needed. I'm sure my old Mopar mount won't fit

You should be able to get the 3 gauges and mount for around $300 and it will be money well spent. I say 220 is max safe tranny temp and 1300 egt for a few minutes and 1500 for a few seconds. That is if the probe is mounted PREturbo. Here is a pic of my gauges Shutterfly | Slideshow

i tow a 7500pds toy hauler and 10k pds loaded. ive owned both the 7.3 and now the 6.0. i tow in od with tow haul mode on and stock 3.73 my egt's run at 1000 degrees runnin 60 to 65 mph and tranny at around 200 degrees. towing you should try to keep the egts around 1000 degrees and the tranny no more than 250. actually 250 is too hot. i also run the sct with tow setting from dj's and it works great. i know if you have the 7.3, you can find a 6.0 tranny cooler for direct bolt in and its much bigger. also if you do the egr delete on the 6.0's it will help your engine temp by 20 degrees less. hope this helps

If you have 6.0l PSD or 6.4L PSD with torqshift tranny you only have tow/haul mode you turn on tow/haul mode let motor and tranny do it's thing and you will have no problems. I pull about 11,000lbs of trailer I just leave in the t/h mode no problems with tranny or it finding a gear.

??Tranny cooler stock??
follow the cooler lines up to the radiator. If both lines go back to the trans then , no external cooler. If 1 of the lines turns and goes up front, then you have extra cooler.
Toweing in od with 4.10 gears with 8,000 lbs is ok. 10,000 +, ???? i think i'd slow down and go to 3rd.

ps. alabamafrog. the '99 is a 4 spd, not a 5spd. Some people count lockup as a gear but technicaly it's not. Lockup does occure in 3rd and 4th.
