possibly too much weight for the 7.3?
Ok,
so here is my situation. i just bought a eager beaver 9T triple axle with electric brakes. it has a lunette eye. no idea how much this weighs. i need to move a 23000lb forklift on it for a few miles. its mostley back roads. i know this is a bad idea but my first question is is the truck capable of moving it. I have a 2001 f-350 4x4 with the 7.3L and 6sp ZF tranny. i know this combo is put in larger trucks like 550s so i was thinking in 4low i would be able too move it. anyone attemped this much with there truck? |

i have pulled about 25000 lbs worth of hay with a 2000 f-350 drw 4x4 auto. ran about 55 on back roads in 2 wheel drive but when i got to the steep incline of my driveway i used 4x4 low. i did prolly 15 trips like this edit it was with a 38ftgoose neck with elec. over hydl. brakes Last edited by Fast_Frank : 09-24-2007 at 06:14 PM. |

i would not worry bout the truck the trailer is what i would be worrying about. what size axels are on the trailer? if they are 8k axles 24k is your gross weight but remember that does not mean put 24k on there you have to add the weight of the trailer to that to. I used to work at a trailer repair shop only reason im tellin you that. you should have seen some of the things i seen that people brought for us to fix.

At work we have a JCB highlift telescoping fork, the dry weight is 21000K, a few years back our truck was out of town with the trailer and we had a guy with a dually pick up attempt this. He had 4 miles to go, class 5 hitch, pintle hook with a 9 ton(18k gvw). When he drove the fork on his trailer the back wheels of his truck came off the ground, he did not care?!? The truck was squatted dead on the axle.... front tires barely had traction to steer....his 9T trailer was boarderline.....he started moving about 2500ft into it the front tire of the trailer blew out dumping more weight on the truck, front wheels came offf the ground, lol, and then his truck tires blew out, and the alum rims got mangled, and with all the twisting and weight shifting his hitch got bent and twisted. In the end we ended up driving the machine there with 2 escort cars one in front and one in back. His (new at the time)2000 Dodge loaded with all the goodies had about 5-6k in damage. He said he tore up the bumper and the frame was bent a little....and somehow he didn't care. said its a truck should be able to use like one?!? If you attempt it, make sure you have good tires everywhere, trailer tires especially and use a real pintle hitch rated for at least 10K. They say hitches are supposed to handle 3x the stated cap. but then they fail. Keep in mind a 9T trailer loads a good amount of weight on the vehicle since they are usually pulled by 26-33K gvw trucks where 6T isn't much. I would find a local construction co. and see if they would help or a HD towing co with a HD rollback. They usually are fair in price from what I have found...$90-150, and no worries its their equip.
Good luck with what you choose. Goood Luck with what you choose, hope your clutch is good if you do it in H. |
