It bumps up line pressure in the tranny and changes shift points as well. depends on how much weight you are pulling really if you are gonna use it

My ford mechanic told me that when towing to always have the overdrive off and keep the rpm's between 2000-3000.

See,now I thought the tow/haul switch turned off the O/D but I just came home and switched it on at 65mph and it stayed in overdrive. In fact, from a stop it shifted into O/D as well. Now, the shifting was firmer and it was firmer downshifting and held it in gear longer too. This was also using the IDP Xtreme Street tune.

My truck is a 99 and the switch on the gearshift is for overdrive on/off. I think in the later years the gearshift says tow/haul. As far as I know it's the same and turns off the overdrive.

You can tow in overdrive without any issues as long as the tranny isn't always hunting for gears. In other words its not constantly downshifting and upshifting into od.

On the newer 5 spd Torqshift autos the tow/ haul mode does not turn off overdrive. It does as stated before increase line pressure and I believe change when the torque converter locks up and gives you that, "exhaust brake" feature when going down hill or braking hard.
