MPG sound right?

Well this weekend I picked up a 34 foot flatbed trailer, and towed a couple of jeeps up for play time. I only got 9.5 mpg though, using the 40 hp tow setting on the tuner. I cant imagine the load was heavier than 12k. Another question, what do you guys run at on the highway. I was at 2500 revs doing about 62 mph with no OD. Is that too much?

That does not sound too far off. The higher RPMs and the weight and the drag will bring your MPG down.

I just got back from a trip camping and was towing an 8-9k 5th wheel that was sitting high in the front -- towed it at 65 - 75, anywhere from 1700 to 2500 RPM and got between 10.7 to 12.3 MPG.... of course, the slower I went I got the 12, the faster I went I got the 10's....

Towing

I'm new to the forum - by about 15 minutes now but I am very experienced at towing.

I have a stock '03 with 33's and I reguraly tow 10 - 12,000 pounds on weekend 1500 mile trips through the Applachian mountains.

My trailer is a 25' V nosed fully enclosed. Mileage on the flats range from 10 - 14. Once I hit the mountains - mileage typically drops to around 9. I have seen as low as 7 on the extended steep climbs - more then 3 miles up.

Depending on load, speed (I average 70mph) and terrain, if you are getting 9.5 with a 35' open trailer - it has alot of resistance being open - then 9.5 doesnt sound so bad.

I've heard if you chip these things mileage is considerably better on the grades.

For the record, I towed 26,000 + miles last year, this year around 9,000+/- thus far. (amazing how a full time job interferes with 1500 mile weekend trips )
