Brake controler not working?

I was out picking toilets up this weekend after fixing the old beast. Crank sensor went at 266K miles. And the brake controller quite working. No light and no brakes. Now the trailer really isn't that heavy but the brakes are nice to have.

I checked the battery on the trailer and it said it needs recharging. Could this be the culprit? I thought the brakes drew power off the truck and the battery was for use if the trailer did break away from the truck. What else could it be? The controller was new spring of 06. And has only been used less than 10 times, we don't use this trailer much and our other trailer is small with no brakes.

Heres the truck and trailer: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g3...T/101_1089.jpg
Any help appreciated!

you are correct about the battery, it is used if trailer breaks away. i would ckeck the fuses to start with as far as your light and brakes not working and the trailer ground, if it's not grounded things won't work right
