Brake Controller And Pigtail
I bought a used Excursion with the factory trailer hitch and rear plug for trailer brakes. I plan to tow a trailer with rig. When I inspected the rear plug I did not see a male connector for a 30 amp trailer hookup. I also did not see a factory brake controller in the dash. There is a seperate button on the transmission shift which seems to overide the transmission overdrive gear.
1. Is there a seperate pigtail I'm supposed to get to hook-up the 30 Amp trailer plug to? 2. Is it presumptious to assume that Ford would include a brake controller along with the tow package? 3. How do I use the transmission override when I'm towing the trailer? Thanks for your assistance

What do you mean by 30 amp trailer plug. If you are talking Electricity to run interior lights and AC and so forth then it would not have it stock. Also as far as factory brake controller those came out in 05. The plug that comes from the factory for the trailer is a 7 way RV style plug for trailer lights |

The 30 Amp he is referring to is the brake controller circuit in the truck that takes a 30 Amp fuse. My '01 came with a tow package and had the 7-round and 4-flat for trailer connections in the back.. most trucks I have seen (ford super duty) have had that same combo. But I had to install a 30 Amp fuse in the braker controller slot in the fuse box under the hood. Then I just simply plugged in my braker controller to the factory harness (no splicing) and was good to go... |

Brake Controller I like the Prodigy the best for 2 to 3 axes on your trailer. This new MaxBrake sound good also. Check it out also. |

yep most trucks that don't have the factory brake controller come with a pigtail in the glove box, wire that up to your brake controller and just plug it in under the dash, it's a little hard to find and get to put I promise it's down there, should be straight up from the gas (diesel) pedal, and for the overdrive I always run mine in overdrive and never had any problems towing but if you get into big mountains or hills you may want to manually disengage the overdrive

Ah, forgot about that portion of his question... yah - unless your transmission is searching, ie. jumping out of OD and back... then leave the OD button alone. Unless you like keeping the RPM's up?? But I would think that would waste fuel and work the engine harder than need be. On my F150 - I would always have to switch OD off when pulling a trailer - otherwise I would have fried the tranny!!! |

My factory brake controller plug under the dash was hard to find, it's straight up from the skinny pedal and over to the right a little, it was behind a bunch of stuff and it had a ratchett fastener pin/push pin into a hole to keep it secured, have to pull that out with the plug then you can freely expose and move the plug around to connect a controller to. I also had a a bag with the fuse, the factory harness that goes into the plug under the dash. I don't think I've ever seen a Superduty without a hitch with the 7 and 4 plug trailer connections on the back. |
