Transport business?

How does one get into the auto transport business or transport of other goods like rv's and such? I've been interested in it for some time now. I see them running around the twin cities here all the time. Hauling anything from golf carts to campers. I'm getting bored sitting behind the desk 10-12hrs a day. I'd rather be out driving.

I do understand that a cdl will be required. And I will be talking the written test in a couple weeks. So that I can start helping out the old man more than just pumping out PT's. And will be getting certified to pump and inspect septic systems. But am not ready to jump into large tracktor trailers rightaway.

Anyway what else would you need to get started? Insurance, truck and trailer? And were do you find work? Do most go through brokers to find work or do most start through other large companies to find work?

And If I were to get into this what equipment would you recommend? I would probably find a Used F450-550 to start with. Any opinions or personal experience appreciated. Will this be worth looking into?

There is a member of the org. who transports, but I can't remember his screen name off the top of my head. He was looking for people, but you need a dually at a minimum and extra insurance. Maybe someone else will chime in on who it was.

I have often wondered the same thing. There's a member on here, can't remember their name, but thats what he does. He posted a bulletin a while bcak looking for folks interested. It was gonna take a lot of insurance and stuff to get into and it was gonna be full time so I didn't do it. I'd like to find something a few days a week because I'm not quiting my job with benefits to go drive for myself. Good luck with finding something.

You will need load insurance ant top quality auto insurance. Look in the classifieds and ask around at RV dealers and car lots. Also look into boat and trailer hauling.
