Fines for Oversize/Overweight w/o permit

Just a hypothetical question here--

I found out that this boat I'll be towing will have to have oversize/overweight permits to go from AL to LA and back and forth, etc. The trailer length overall will be about 40', and the width is roughly 11'; total weight will be approx 13k-14k lbs. Once I get the full trailer specs I'm applying for the permits.

Whats the fine if you get pulled over without them? I'm going to get the permits either way, but I'm curious

I don't no what the fine would be the problem is they could shut you down write were the get you (scales or highway)They are a little lenient with me running farm plates but i would get the permits also for something that big.

I see you mentioned the scales thing--does towing this boat mean I have to go to the weigh stations? I sure hope not-thats certainly a pain for such a short trip (going through 3 states)

I don't know the fines are either but, your width is a dead give away.

IF your overwidth, you have to stop at the scales. IF your hauling your own boat, you might be ok, but if it is for hire, you better have DOT numbers, a log book, and a health card or they can put you out of service right there.

Man, I had no idea its this involved. Not for hire or anything, just towing for the guy I work for as a favor....who happens to have the same last name so I can say its a relative or something.

I'm used to little boats, not this behemoth. I dont know how all those SKA guys get around with their 38' boats and stuff without dealing with this trouble. I'll have to ask some of them about this as well. Thanks for the help

Call each state, since you are a private individual and not a transportation company the laws are different as well as the permit costs. AL is one of the worst in the country. Louisanna from my expereince could care less. Your width is a HUGE issue. You may not be allowed to move it yourself, make sure you call each state. If you break the law with over width, weight or lenght everyone is correct. They will shut you down on the spot. In TX they have roaming state trooper pick ups that can scale you on the side of the road and lazer measure everything else.
Good Luck

This was in Pa but a buddy of mine got pulled over, to check the weight
of his 38 boat. Did not have a scale with them so he had to follow them 45min. of of his way to a scale. One car in front and one behind. They ended up writing him for over weight because he did not have the truck reg. for the combined weight of the boat truck and trailer. Fine was 1600.00 he ended up fighting it and won. Every states different. Make sure he's willing to pay the fines, just in case.
