tranny help.

i just bought a 97 250 4x4 powerstroke auto with 240k on the the clock.

i'm having problems with the tranny and was hoping someone can shed some light on it for me.

the problem:
loud knock, almost grinding sound coming from the front tranny (TC) area. (sounds like a gas engine knock when the bottom end is gone)

when it occurs: when there is no load on the drivetrain, (put it in gear, hold the brake and give it light throttle and the sound goes away.)

the truck runs and drives fine besides this noise, NO im NOT driving it around like this.

can the TC be causing this?

can it be a bearing in the front of the tranny somehwere?

front pump?

screwed?

i gotta get this figured out ASAP

thanks!

It's really hard to diagnose sounds long distance but I'm thinking that you've got loose converter bolts or a broken flex plate. You can check the converter bolts just by pulling the cover. In fact you might be able to see if the flex plate is broken with the cover off.
