loud tranny noise

My truck is an 99 F 350 with the 7.3 and E40D tranny. There has been a noise coming from the tranny ( a loud rattle/grinding noise )thought it might be the flex plate, but after inspection the plate looks fine. could it be the torque converter? The truck has 330,000 miles and this noise started about50,000 miles ago. I thought the tranny was junk so I kept driving. well 50,000 miles later the noise is louder but the tranny runs fine. I use it to tow a trailer about every other week and have no problems. Except everyone staring.
Could really use help quick, I need to have my truck running for work by end of week

How did you inspect the Flex Plate? Did you pop the cover off the bottom of the bellhousing or did you pull the tranny? I've delt with several broken flex plates and rarely can you actually see the break as it has been under the ring washer for the crank bolts. I'm no expert...just a thought.

Through inspection plate.then pulled tranny and changed Flex plate and torque converter. that was about 20,000 miles ago and every thing is good now
