help! stuck on side of road

Ok so the truck has been making a bit of a rattling noise , put a screwdriver the vacuum pump sounded like that's what it was plus it stopped when the belt was off so I replaced rattle stopped. Started up today on my way home again and than I lost all my gears after I shut the truck down the starter just spun and never engaged it was just like whining as if it was spinning to fast.
The truck is a 97 PSD with a e4od 4x4 what should I look into first taking the inspection plateoff?
Has anyone else experienced this?
