Trans in bad shape?

My trans started not shifting into 3rd gear yesterday. Will go all the way to redline with no shift. I let off the pedal and back on a little and it will shift.
I pulled a code:

P0733- GEAR 3 RATIO ERROR

Can someone give me some insight on this?
Thanks.

This was off another web site. I would check fluids first then service. look for burned fluid or metal shavings.

P0733
SSA, SSB or internal parts

3rd gear error No 3rd gear.

Incorrect gear selection, depending on failure or mode and manual lever position. Shift errors may also be due to other internal transmission concerns (stuck valves, damaged friction material). Engine rpm could be higher or lower than expected.

First check your fluid. If it is burned, then you probably need big help.
Then you could change the fluid, the filter could be plugged.

Thanks, filter could be plugged? That doesn't sound good since it would be plugged with metal shavings.
What was the other site you found that info on?

When I lost third in my Lincoln it was the forward clutch that was burned. I also had a MLPS failure another time, it exhibited similar symptoms.

Still not right

Well I changed the fluid and filter this afternoon, and man did it look bad! The pan magnet was COVERED with metal particles, maybe about 3/8" completely covering the magnet. I wanted to flush the Torque converter but I couldn't get the last cover bolt out.

The problems still persist. New trans time?
