Tranny out of commission

I have a 2000 F350 SD with the tranny out. The transmission went out 600 miles from home. It is at a local tranny shop where the tranny died. The owner just called and said it would be $5,000 for him to rebuild the tranny. He said the only thing really left on the tranny is the case. It would be pretty much rebuilt stock with a Billet TC. Is $5,000 high or normal? Would it be better if I provide a good core for a rebuild? I have looked at the JW transmission and may head that way.

Thanks for any advise.
