Jon, That "piece of crap" filter is a very good filter. It should be installed into the cooler return (rear of trans) after any o/hhaul. It should then be removed 1 month later. fyi, all e4od's from 89 to 97 should have the fluid level 1/2 to 3/4 inch above the full mark. The dipsticks are too long and fluid level is actually low from the factory. One of the top 5 reasons these trans fail.
