No offense, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that this has happend to. I did go on and finnish the trip and towed it @ 700 miles in 90+ outside temps with no further problems and that was towing 9,000 lbs. I agree with you in that I feel my trany is on the weak side and needs to have the needed converter upgrade and seal change or I'm afraid its going to happen again

what i was told by my tranny guy is on the e4od there is a bushing that goes bad on the input shaft and when you work a trans hard the fluid builds up pressure and blows it past the front seal, he said if you just replace the front seal the same thing will happen and in order to replace the bushing the whole trans basically has to be rebuilt. so you can rebuild your trans or stop towing with it but what good is a psd if you cant tow with it

Mine hasn't leaked a drop since june when my incident happened either. I think what happened with mine was that it was low on fluid when I left town and caused the tranny to heat up and blow the seal out. when it cooled off the seal reseated itself and stopped leaking. Its not in my budget to rebuild the tranny now however in the near future I will be having it rebuilt or else purchasing a rebuilt one with the updated seal so I can have some peace of mind when towing.

E4od

I pulled a 31 foot fifth wheel with my 91 460 gas. If I came home from a trip and started backing up the driveway to park the trailer it would boil A/T fluid out of the filler tube every time. I started letting the truck sat for about 30 min to an hour before putting it up and that stopped the losing of fluid.

Up until a certain date (feb 00) ford did not install a water to oil cooler for the tranny (in the rad.) There is a bulletin on this to update with this additional cooler. Your oil came out of the trans vent. If your trans has ever been ford serviced, there will be an inline trans filter on the cooler return (it will be plugged.) The reason the temp did not go up is the temp sender is on the cooler return line (Thanx FORD.) The addition cooler in the rad is required for severe use and ford updated later trucks to reflect this.

so what is up with reverse? It did seem as if it only started doing that when backing up the driveway. i did have to go up and back a few times to correctly get the trailer in the shed.

reverse backing

When you are in reverse the heat builds up much faster and the transmission cooler can't keep it cool running that slow backing up.
