1990 e4od problems need help

I have a 1990 E350 with a 7.3 and e4od. I was driving up the road about an hour ago when I suddenly lost power. I coasted to a stop, opened the hood and realized I had battery cables loose. I reconected them and tightened them. The van started right back up. When i put it in drive and went to pull out it felt like the tranny is in 3rd gear. When I pull it into second and first it downshifts but both 2nd and 1st position feel like the same gear. So I think I only have 2 gears 2nd and third and it will only shift manually. What should I start checking?
