Thanks for your quick reply. My truck is sitting down at the dealership right now waiting for an oil change tomorrow morning. Sounds like it will be getting a new seal as well as some gauges!
Thanks again

If it leaks when cool then pull the tranny and change the seal. If not then get a gauge and extra cooler on that thing before you smoke it and have to spend lots more than $1,200 to fix it. Heat kills auto trannys.

My E40D leaks from everywhere! The truck has 170k, i've owned it since 140k and the previous owner replace the trans at 90k. He was pretty hard on the truck so I expect it to chit itself any day now. It sometimes hesitate shifting between 2nd and 3rd an shutters in OD. I'll guess I'll keep on till it quits and then go some more.

Well it leaves a little puddle now everytime I drive it I guess I will check the fluid a lot and be carefull with it. Eventually I will have the seal replaced, but not until I can cope with $1,200 for a $10 seal...

I changed my torque converter once, took about 6 hours. The seal should be about the same amount of work.

changing a seal is not hard to do even by yourself just be careful cause those tranny's are heavy but it can be done with very basic tools, A little extra info i have (in addition to my 04 psd) a 1991 f-150 351/eod4 and similar symptom hot day started leaking fluid bad got a new seal changed it honed the torque converter lasted until i went on a 350km trip and it locked up in reverse it popped out and just about made it home and same problem, it turns out there was a mod (don't remeber what year this applied up to) that required drilling a hole in the valve body to provide proper lube to the planetaries and when i ripped mine apart the planetaries were seized so just a thought but if your fluid stinks you might want to investigate a bit further.
