Tranny Growl?
99 F250 7.3L
at idle, growling seems to come from flywheel area & when you raise RPMs to 900-1000 the growl goes away--this doesn't affect performance whatsoever. found another 2 99s, a 2000, and a 1998 Powerstroke doing the same thing. one lady told me it was the flywheel/flex plate, mine is in the shop right now and they say the flex plate looks fine-and heck, it does look fine. any ideas?

torque converter is coming apart inside, maybe not enough to cause problems , but its worn inside enough growl at idle and when you raise rpms it sort of balances out , seen this many times
|

thanks again for info on tranny growl
just got back from shop-flex plate looks good. re-stabbed tranny and still makes growl. read your reply and went to listen, now with truck up on rack it's easier to pinpoint the growl. thanks for the info. now to tackle the torque converter..................

My truck does the same
99-3-5 - Noisy T/C* I came across this post at TheDieselStop.com, I think thats just how some of them came... Problem - Some 1999 F-series with the 4R100 transmission may exhibit a rattle/scraping noise in the converter housing area of the transmission case. Action - To diagnose, place gear selector in park and using a break out box, ground pin 54 (TCC). This will fully apply the torque converter clutch. Cycle the torque converter clutch on and off a few times by applying and removing the ground to pin 54. If the rattle/scraping noise is not present when the converter clutch is applied (pin 54 grounded), replace torque converter. Affected Vehicles - 1999 F-Series Super Duty, 7.3 DIT, 4R100 and 1998-1999 E-Series built after 1/5/98. Some 1999 F-series 250HD/350/450/550 Super Duty and 1998/1999 Econoline Series (built after 1/5/98) and equipped with 7.3l diesel Parts - Updated Converter: XL3Z-7902-DARM

Hi Rick,I put a new TC in my 99 about 3 months ago and it took the growl away ,it's like driving a new truck,had mine done for 500.00 bucks
