Tranny problem? need QUICK feedback please

Heres the problem...frequently when I put the truck into reverse, the engine will dog down and it will ocassionally kill the engine. The tech @ allegheny ford says its the TC going bad and locking up. But, since it has NEVER done this in any of the drive gears, that, to me, doesn't make any sense, since the TC always turns the same direction. Would seem to me to have more to do with something in the reverse gearing rather than the TC. Any feedback here would be appriciated(sp). And..is this a BIG problem in need of IMMEDIATE repair, or something that could possibly wait for a while? since I'm reeally strapped for funds right now and I NEED my truck (providing the dealer ever gets the engine running right). Thanks Guys!

I reccommend AAMCO.com - Home (Transmission Repair, Transmission Service by Aamco. Car Repairs & More) let them look at the problem, they can probablly fix it cheaper and better then the dealer.

It is the converter lugging the engine down but it is not the the root cause. You have a cross leak in the pump causeing the lockup vlave to stroke to the apply position for the tcc. The reason it does it in reverse is the pump creates allmost twice as much pressure in reverse as forward gears.
It will get worse. Preston

well...I think I found the problem...mind you there has been no evidence of a fluid leak but just for schyts and giggles I decided to stop at a service plaza in Mass, on the way back from a run, and check the fluid levels....it took an entire GALLON! to bring the level up to the stick!! Needless to say, it goes in reverse just fine now...go figure..LOL

Howard, you have to do something about your service plan on the truck, a gallon down on trans fluid and your just asking for problems in the future.

Yup I'd be checking the cooler lines and pan gaskets on that just to be sure.
