Installing Tru-Cool

While towing I was hitting uncomfortable temps on my tranny (4R100 in an ’01 CC 250). Passed on the 6.0 cooler due to cost & bought the Tru-Cool Max 4739 thinking it was an additional/piggy back system but it appears to be a replacement instead. I have read here of others putting 1, or even 2 T.C.’s in addition to the existing.

Question is does the T.C. cooler flow at the same rate as the original allowing them to be installed inline or do they need to be installed otherwise? Anyone that has installed 1 or more T.C’s on they’re truck got any info they can share with me or direct me to an online visual of the procedure? I need to install tomorrow so any help would much appreciated.

Don't know if this will help or not but you can find a thread in the 6.0 tech files that will help. I will be adding another cooler to mine on Tuesday. Hope this helps you.

I put the trucool 40 cooler on my truck and mounted it to the back side of the front bumper over the hole where the tag and fog lights would go if I had them. I just took the return line from the factory cooler and hooked it to the trucool and then hooked the other end of the trucool back to the line going to the tranny. My cooler came with a piece of hose, clamps and fittings for like $120. It worked great, really dropped my towing temps. I highly recommend it.

A few years later when my tranny finally died at 200,000 miles I had to replace the factory cooler so Ford would honor the warranty on the new tranny, at that time I bought the trucool 40K cooler that is designed to replace the factory one, it was a bit of a pain to install but I now have 2 trucool 40K’s in series and can’t get the tranny over 150 no matter how I abuse it.

I looked at the spot behind the license plate the other day. Did you have to fab any brackets to hold it there?

Oh, and one more thing, you want the fittings on the top so the fluid is forced by gravity to fill the whole cooler before it runs out back to the tranny for maximum cooling. If mounted with fittings on the bottom it may just flow from one side back out the other without getting enough surface area exposure to have a good heat exchange with the air.

Yea, that’s me being lazy, I usually post my reply then I can click on my signature link to get to my photo site and I then add them from there. That way I don’t have to go find the photo site or log into it. It usually takes me a few edits until I get everything to display right.
