You will have to pass a written test and then wait 4-6 weeks for a driving test for the CDL. All of my 5 trucks have a GVWR of 25,999 -I have had all the trailers built by Kaufman Trailers for these specs. I still have to have all authority ( MC# and DOT#), cargo insurance and be taged for commercial use. The only way a not-for-hire to be legal is it must be for 100% recreational vehicle use only. And by the way the law reads you will be saving money by transporting these yourself so saving money is the same as making money - as far as DOT is conserned. I have run these wedge style trucks before they were as popular as they are now and have been through almost anything you can imagine. I just want you to know what you are up against just to save a few $$$ may cost you 10X what it would have cost to just get a legal company to take care of it for you. -- The tags alone for the correct weight(under 26K or a 2X) here in AL is 841.00 a year. Looking at current right now you should be able to find a comapny with all the right stuff to do this for around $210 a car. Thats way less than the cost and hassle of doing it yourself. -But thats my

i know this is a little old but i am wondering now...

If you are pulling a TT or a 5th camper, do you have to worry about all this BS?

what about a single car hauler?

If you own the vehicles, and your under 26k combined, your not a commercial vehicle, bottomline. CDL rules do not apply to you. A not for hire sign would be a good suggestion.

If your not getting paid to tow it, no, your not a commercial vehicle.

26k as i sit on the scale or 26k when i add the gvw of the trailer and truck?

What the combined weights of what its plated for.. I have an f700 dump but I only plate it for 22k the gvwr is 30k, but I didn't plate it for the actual rating. You have to add up the weights of the actual plates....

if the truck is 12,500 and the trailer is at 14,800 then its over 26K as a combination of the 2 and requires a CDL - If you are hauling cars to a sale or even for a friend down the road- then even if they are your own - You are saving money and to the DOT its the same as earning money.The only way to not be commercial with a car hauler is for it to be for vehicles that are tages to you and be for recreation use only (car shows), then they may not bother you - but if the GVWR is over 26K then do not move it without a CDL ,IFTA stickers,and a apportioned palte, it aint worth the tickets just pay someone with all of this stuff to do it for ya.

well if i am pulling a car hauler it would be just my wrx going to the track or maybe some kind of race car (since i can not talk the woman into letting me road race on motorcycles )

so with one car THAT I OWN on a single car hauler with my f350. that should be ok and i dont have to deal with this BS right?
