BUt I am not a commercial truck, right? I am not hauling for money or anything else in consideration. I am only hauling for personal use, so I do not qualify as a commercial truck right?

I am checking on Florida law right now. From what I am reading, unless I am greater than 65 feet, I do not need any special permits. I am thinking that I will be over 65 ft though.

Are the permits I need expensive for a single trip?

On a small rig like this, they aren't really concerned if you are over weight, thats what a TN DOT told me on a level 2 walk around.

They want to make sure you're equipment is in proper working order, you have all your paperwork in order, etc.

The GVWR is allowing the cargo that you will be hauling, if the truck and trailers GVWR is over 26k, then you need a CDL, if under, then you don't

But you will need a medical card

Not every state has to do that. In Mo if you are less than 24,000# you don't have to stop. I have talked to the guys at the weigh station near my house. In Ga talking to there DOT office you don't have to stop if you are less than 26,000# and less than 65'. If you had your car hauler with you, were you over 65'.

I have heard the same thing from a retired Illinois DOT officer. The office he worked at was the 2nd in the nation for writing tickets for over-weight.

If you are getting reimbursed for fuel from your buddy you are for hire. Around here if you work on you car or you friends to win awards at shows or money you are classified a business.

Thanks for the help everyone.

If I am putting all of this together correctly:

I need to check the GVWR on my dually and the trailer. If the combination of the two tags in under 26K, I am ok, as long as I have a medical card and have inspected the truck thoroughly before leaving. I also need to post "Not For Hire" on the truck and trailer.

If it is over 26K, how hard will it be for me to get a CDL?

Get a log book and a daily vehicle inspection report. If they pull you over and you have all the paper work they will be more linient if you are breaking the law.
