From what I understand, after insurance and all the other junk, you'll have to do quite a bit of work on the side.

Getting a DOT # is the easy part. It's free and you do it online. After that...have fun. I had to get mine and I don't haul for hire. Just my own stuff for my farm equipment and hay for my animals. But, I'm over 10k and I transit another state so I had to get everything to stay legal and out of trouble. Hauling for hire is a whole other animal, and I'm just glad I don't! Good luck.

Google "DOT MC-150" and you should find a link to the the website to get started. Another good place would be to call your state DOT office. Mine has been fairly helpful for my situation.

I had a guy do it for me, cost around $300 for everything to get filed, but if you screw one item up and it gets kicked back, it can be quite a delay getting it straightened out. (Remember, you're dealing with the government.)
