How do you guys run power to your winches? All the time connected or do you just pull out the battery cables when you need to run it?

I bought a Champion 9500lb for 400 bux at Costco has the speed mount so I can use it in my enclosed or put it on my truck with the quick connects.. I mounted a 750 cca marine battery beside it also so it can run with the truck unhooked.. and then when im hooked up it charges the battery.. Im to old to be loading it by hand...lol

if u put a batt in a batt tray to keep it out of the weather next to the winch u can hook up an adapter plug to ur trailor plug and have it charge ur batt when the truck is running..i dunno which wires go to what part of the plug but im sure someone else knows

I haul my fox bodied Mustang regularly on my open car trailer. I just use a champion 2000lb and double line it when I have to pull a car up on the trailer. I mounted one of the under step bumper 2" receiver hitches upside down on the A frame up front and then mounted the winch to a 2" tube that I can slide into the receiver. This way my winch isn't out in the open for everyone to steal when I'm not using it. As to powering the unit, I bought some cable and soldered some old jumper cable clamps to one end and attached them to the winch at the other end. When I need to winch I pop the hood and connect to the battery.

I've used this winch to pull my car up several time with blown transmissions and clutches, and I've loaded a friend's fox Mustang that had the axle break at the hub and the wheel came off. This winch has worked well and never hit that point where it was struggling to load the cars. Now I know I'm only loading cars that weigh in the range of 3000-3500lbs, but the actual pull needed is not that much. If you are loading trucks onto your trailer, you would need a bigger winch, but this winch does everything I need it to do.

The Superwinch that I listed pulls a Lincoln Blackwood or a Bentley Flying Spur in with ease. Keep in mind that the longer your power cables are, the more power you lose. I mounted the marine battery beside mine and charge it up after about 12 uses. So keep in mind that if you run cables from your truck battery, they will be close to 25ft from the battery to the winch.

If you check on the cover of your trailer plug- the factory 7 bladed one, it shows which pins are which- the ground and the 12V connection... My trailer for work got a winch in it- but its not here, after the front seal went out on it and we had up push it up or pull it up with ratchet straps one night... they have used it when the shifter (auto) got hyperextended and could not be put back out of first... We had a 650 or so battery in it- they went cheap, and when I added the power tongue jack, I wired it all to the onboard battery and also the battery to charge off the truck. It didn't work at first- I had the fuse in the block, but not the relay in its block... a trip to the dealer and poof! power! (I think, its not quit yet)

I use a superwinch 2000 pound, and it pulled a big chevy conversion van up my trailer, i had to double up the cables, and help it with a come along though, but it got the job done. Works great for cars.

I use the one I bought for pullin my 79 into the enclosed its way overkill but its the only way I can load and unload, once its in you cant open the door or go through the window..so I figured since it will be used so often better get one that dont have to struggle. hell you cant even walk between the truck and the walls once its loaded..lol
