muffler laws

Ok dps keeps pullin me over cuz i dont have a muffler and cat waht r the laws for it i thout that u could have one or the other or both im lookin to get a mbrp kit and maybe fix a cat under there so they wount give me crap anymore

those laws vary from state to state. you'd have to check into your local regulations to be certain. i live in alaska and sound restrictions are the only things i've ever been harassed about for any type of vehicle.

Thats why he asked the texas members............ Dont know man, I am running a gutted cat dumped at the axle, and i havent been hassled yet, but I dont flip off cops when I drive by them

lol well im up here in east taxas and the one dps that keeps pullin me over. pullin me over form somthin dum like no mudflaps or window tint and then saids he has to check for a cat and muffler he did that a week ago and then to day. I hate the dps around me we and like 10 of them here to many for are small county i got stoped one time for speedin and two more of them pulled up as i give him my DL

Overall width is determined by measuring from the widest part on one side to the widest part on the other side of the vehicle. In some vehicles this may be the dual wheels which would be considered as part of the width. Do not include an outside mirror or mirrors in determining overall width.


As with most such things, you are just taking your chances by altering the emissions system. 99.9% of cops probably wouldnt care if you didn't have a muffler or a cat unless it was annoyingly loud or smoking or some such thing. But there is always that 0.01% who are anal or just have a chip on their shoulder that will write you up just because they can.

I just got inspected last month and have neither of them. Just tell them your year model didnt come with a Cat. Mine didnt.

well i no my truck did not come with a cat and i can get it inspected they dont care its just the dps r the ones that pullin ppl over right and left for no muffler or cat are givein tickits

if it didnt come with a cat from the factory they cant give you a fine for not having one...as for muffler, there are some mufflers mbrp and a few other companies make that are hardly any quieter then the straight pipe...you could always put a muffler on then do a remote dump actuator on the exhaust so you can switch between muffler and straight pipe

just keep a little log in your glovebox of when and who pulls you over... enough lines with the same name can possibly turn into a harassment case....

Ya I live in West TX but travel all over the state and Eastern NM and have not had a problem, sounds like you just have a A$$ of a patrolman. Add a good flow through muffler they are cheap and will not harm your performance. You can get the shortest and smallest body muffler that will still be loud. Then if you still have a problem with him you can do something about harassment
BTW how much and what are the tickets for
