Tie rod ends ??

Is there a true way to tell if the rod ends are bad, once they are off the truck? Thanks

Well I am getting ready to change my front axle assembly converting from leaf spring to coil ,so the axle assembly i am putting in , I have pulled the tie rods and steering assembly off and was just wondering if there was a way to tell. I will probably just replace them.

They should move freely but be firm. I've always checked with everything hooked up and have someone turn the steering wheel to see if there's any slop in them.
