Cool power steering loss

Hi Guys, I am a first time Ford owner. I recently purchased a 2008 F250SD, 2wd, super cab, long bed with the 6.4L diesel. It was an executive driven truck with no heavy duty use over its history. It has an impeccable service history direct from Fords own database. it currently has 160k miles on it. I have started to experience like many other owners the problem of intermittently loosing power steering assist. the steering wheel is almost impossible to turn when it happens. And after reading other owners reports of this problem it appears that maybe I am lucky in that I am not having issues with the brakes too. I am also appalled to learn that Ford knows about this problem but wont issue a recall and fix it. Im sure when someone gets killed because they couldnt stop or steer their truck we may have class action lawsuit to force the issue.

My question to you is : Do we know why or what is the cause of this issue and how to correct it?? I have read of others looking for aftermarket steering boxes, is it that simple of a fix or is it something else within the system? I am not familiar with the hydro-boost method of supplying power to the steering and brakes, and I am hoping someone here can explain it to me.

Any help or advice you may have would be greatly appreciated as I am very apprehensive about driving my truck as it is, even more when I am towing.
Thanks for taking the time.
