Who Has Had Steering Gear Box Failure 05-07
I have a 07 F250 4x4 with 72K miles and on my 3rd steering gear box. I have been breaking gears in the box. Talking to Red Head they have seen this issue on alot of 05-07 SuperDuty's because of Ford's increase in shaft size and using the same gear size to combat bent shafts on the earlier design.
I would like to know how many else of you have had this problem. I am going to file a complaint with Ford because when the gear breaks my steering seizes up until the broken piece falls down out of the way of the gears. I could understand if it was lifted, abused, etc but it is bone stock and mainly driven on the highway. I now don't even like to haul my wife and kids in it and it is our "family car". Luckily both times it has broke in low speed locations, but I wonder if the next time will be a curve in the highway at 60. |

The steering box on my '06 went out around 60,000 miles or so. My truck was out of warranty, but was repaired as a warranty item. Service technician said it wasn't supposed to go out so early. Haven't had any issues since it was replaced and truck now has about 80,000 miles on it.

My 06 steering box went out at 90,000 miles and replaced it with a Redhead. Worked great until I sold the truck.

I sure hope that those of you without problems don't have any. I can't say why it happens, but I do know it is really frustrating to have an 07 with 72K that has broke 2. Everyone I talk to says it is not that common, but Harvey at Red Head has seen too many for him to say much good about the design.
Maybe I need a lift and bigger tires to cure the problem! |
