Looking to move from east coast, but to where?

We're considering relocating from Philadelphia to the south west, but since we don't know the area i'm looking for suggestions from those of you who live there.

a little about us

I work in IT, System Engineer/IT Management/etc
Wife works in retail mangement

I've lived very near the city my entire life (Detroit first, then Philly)
She lied in Michigan farmland until college.

I'd like to live near enough to the desert to go play in the sand on the weekends.

Proximity to cities is a plus, but we'd like to be somewhere we could get some land in a home.

Proximity to mountains/nice drives a big plus.

Relative proximity to road courses also a big plus.

of course, work opportunities for me and nearby major shopping areas for her to work (and shop in) is vital.

to sum it up, we would be looking for a "nice" area very near to in the desert with access to tech and retail work.

FWIW she is looking in the greater phoenix area, but we're not ruling out other states/areas, even not so near big cities.

P.S. we both speak only english, so this may also be a consideration if too far south...

Thank you for your input everyone.

Hey check out MIDWAY HEBER UTAH area, its like gods country here man. It is the most beautiful place I have ever lived my whole life, Ive been over the whole west coast too. In my opinion the only better place than here is a house on the beach but you are relatively close to the desert to play in. theres tons of lakes up here to play in. The area with all the mtns is breathtaking every day. Your close enough to alot of cities for work and supplies yet your far enough away it feels like nowhere when it really isnt. We have a local road course and dragstrip thats brand new and really nice !!!! Its just East up the mountains from SLC utah, I would really check this place out man, its cheap to live here, theres plenty of work in utah. Their are a million things to do if you like the outdoors especially you have the best snow on earth and your within hours of some of the most beautiful state parks in america!!! LOL I can go ON and ON and On about this place, I love it up here beside local police their dummy cops lol but this is a wonderful place to live. I would atleast check it out man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Grease Monkey. I lived in the Salt Lake Valley for 5 years. Utah has a lot to offer.

I grew up in Hunterdon County and worked in Newark, Linden, Elizabeth and Rahway.
Now I live 70 miles South of Sacramento and I miss pork roll.
