Looking to move from east coast, but to where?

We're considering relocating from Philadelphia to the south west, but since we don't know the area i'm looking for suggestions from those of you who live there.

a little about us

I work in IT, System Engineer/IT Management/etc
Wife works in retail mangement

I've lived very near the city my entire life (Detroit first, then Philly)
She lied in Michigan farmland until college.

I'd like to live near enough to the desert to go play in the sand on the weekends.

Proximity to cities is a plus, but we'd like to be somewhere we could get some land in a home.

Proximity to mountains/nice drives a big plus.

Relative proximity to road courses also a big plus.

of course, work opportunities for me and nearby major shopping areas for her to work (and shop in) is vital.

to sum it up, we would be looking for a "nice" area very near to in the desert with access to tech and retail work.

FWIW she is looking in the greater phoenix area, but we're not ruling out other states/areas, even not so near big cities.

P.S. we both speak only english, so this may also be a consideration if too far south...

Thank you for your input everyone.
